Today is what is commonly known as Black Friday, when retailers of all shapes and sizes announce huge discounts on items in order to offset being "in the red" for most of the [...]
Like fellow comics blogger Rich, I strongly admire and revere the myth, the legend the force of nature known as BRIAN BLESSED.
Most popular literature - in fact, most of contemporary fandom - comes from primarily one source: Sherlock Holmes.
In order to help make the week a little more bearable, here are some assorted pieces of insanity both created and found online. Enjoy!
For most of you, you may be tempted to avoid purchasing the DVD - in fact, you may wish to acquire the hour-long version of this documentary via dubiously legal means.
Most of my life has been drenched in alcohol and tobacco.
It was our usual Sunday night ritual - I head over to Mom's for dinner, and then we have a talk about things - mostly, about family and Mom's life alone.
"We're fighting time itself....and I'm gonna win!(This will have some mild spoilers, mostly pertaining to tone and referents. Will not reveal any major plot twists)
Recently, I found myself listening to pal Chuck's podcast, the Related Recap, in which he discussed why he felt Las Vegas should have a Comic-Con.
To be honest...I've never really liked Doc Savage in comics.
I have to admit, I'm a closet foodie.
This is a post that I have some bias in - not only do I enjoy Doctor Who (which is well documented), but I also have discussed my love of fan films in another online forum. So, in this time before the [...]
To be honest, I hadn't planned on discussing this commercial - having seen Tommy Boy once, and not being impressed, it seemed' [...]
(A brief note of explanation -this was originally presented as part of a now defunct work-related blog; because I am rather proud of this, I'm representing it here, with some jokes taken out and some added. Please feel free to tweet/bookmark/e-mail this site. Enjoy!)
I've said it to others and I'll say it here - when Walter Payton passed away ten years ago, I pretty much gave up enjoying pro football.
This past Halloween saw me take on the challenge of creating my own costume. Out of creativity, enthusiasm, and sheer geekiness, I chose the Golden Age Sandman as my costume. It was obscure enough that a few people would get it, but it also consisted of [...]

Because the last time I asked a question like this, my website analytics went through the roof. In that spirit, I want to add a third factor, just to explore the implications.
I am a firm believer in office toys - those items that, although seemingly inappropriate, make creativity possible.
Continuing on to this week's Halloween-themed speculation...DC's solicitations for January include several Blackest Night issues of comics that were initially canceled or ended. These include The Atom and Hawkman, The Phantom Stranger, Weird Western Tales (written by Dan DiDio possibly to keep him out of trouble)....and [...]
Note - the following is pure conjecture only, and will be slightly spoiling those who haven't read any of Blackest Night.
While enjoying a nice, adult beverage and evening of conversation with a friend (other details to be found in this podcast), we began talking about reading. My friend had mentioned a book that had a really good science fiction premise, but was taken from a [...]
While you are waiting for tomorrow's TV Party on Comic Related - as well as my Blog Action Post, please consider the following philosophical question. You will be graded.
Never have I been more grateful to have to had go back and pull back issues to catch up on the story.
In a desperate effort to drive traffic to the site, here's some shocking Dalek on Cyberman porn!
As you may have already heard, Chicago lost its bid for the 2012 Olympics. Yet, I have been relatively silent until just before the news broke - mostly because many of my colleagues were ardent supporters. But now, since it's happened, I can honestly say....
I have been enjoying the unique comedy magic of CBS' The Big Bang Theory, and I have a few questions:
I think it is safe to state that, for the record, I have a very strong Marxist streak in my past - and present.
You know, it's actually been awhile since I've written about my current favorite funnybooks - oh, sure, there's been the occasional mention of Guardians of the Galaxy/Nova/etc (Marvel doing big, loud space opera); my love of Tony Lee's work on IDW's Doctor Who (he's managing to' [...]
In death - much like comedy and politics - timing is everything.
Of all of the Doctors in the classic series of Who, I have always felt that Colin Baker (as the Sixth Doctor) got way too short a season. Much of it was due to the infamous 1985 "hiatus"...and when Who returned, it was a [...]
Some "cult" movies often don't deserve that status - usually, they're movies that have everything, but for some reason, don't quite succeed. They're quirky, unusual, but have some intangible -but likeable - quality that keeps warranting further viewing.
That's right - this very blog has made it's 1,200th post (of course, since this blog hit post 1,000 a year ago, that only means I've been slacking). But in that spirit, here are some things you can look forward to seeing on this very' [...]
It was almost poetic, in a way - first, catching the trailer for Surrogates at the front of District 9 on a Saturday, then finding a copy of the graphic novel at my local library. Eagerly, I read the graphic novel on [...]
I couldn't believe the news - I actually heard it via IM from a coworker. Upon checking my Twitter stream, I was actually surprised to hear of Disney's purchase of Marvel for $4 billion.

Just to make sure you're reading this through a reader,
and that it isn't being reposted on another blog. For

It's easy to forget that, in this modern post-Civil War/Secret Invasion/current Dark Reign Marvel universe, there once was a time when Marvel comics simply sped along. Instead of the current house "decompressed" style, Marvel comics were chock full of massive exposition, slam-bang action, and...well, attempts to' [...]
I've not kept my appreciation of James Robinson's work in comics (especially Starman and The Golden Age) a secret - I've always enjoyed his deft touch with characters, his literate scripting, and his ability to create a rich, touching atmosphere. I have to admit that' [...]
This is a movie I've been waiting all summer to see - in all honesty, since Star Trek in May, there really hasn't been anything that's caught my attention. Plus, to be honest, last week was kind of a busy, hectic week....for reasons I won't go [...]
Even though it's coming out to stores this Wednesday (at least, that's what I heard), I managed to pick up a copy when I attended Wizard World this week. This is one of my you-gotta-buy-this recommendations, but only because of the cause behind it.
With all the hullabaloo about David Tennant's final episodes as
To be honest, I love urban legends. I love reading about not just the "official" history, but those stories that kind of lie in the back of people's minds. There's something about friend-of-a-friend tales that adds an added layer of mystique - granted, they're not always' [...]
(This will, hopefully, be relatively spoiler-free)
Sorry for all the self-absorption: I promise more blogging objectivity in the future, but I thought I'd indulge this one time.
To be blunt, I have some mixed feelings about Blackest Night # 1.
(...or, a cool comic-related thing nobody else knew about last week except me)
Since there's quite a bit going on, and much of it doesn't warrant a full page of my blathering...a nice, bullet pointed encapsulation of various and sundry.
Normally, I don't like blogging about bad comics - in fact, I tend to avoid doing it. I mean, who wants to read me - or anyone - vent about bad comics. (OK, maybe they want to read Chris Sims' dissection, because he's so darn [...]

Being a Doctor Who fan right now is challenging - the next Tennant "special" won't happen until November (although Torchwood is gearing up for a five-night special); the Tenth Doctor will soon regenerate into the Eleventh Doctor, and then...onto a new era.
Now I'm really beginning to feel old.
